0. Canon line
Rob is the near-peer Hokage: a working adult climber documenting chess rating and fitness training in public, turning disciplined struggle into a village other people can join.
He is not selling perfection. He is building proof through reps, losses, analysis, training logs, missed shots, corrected mistakes, and the community that forms around people trying the same climb.
If future content has to choose between “Rob as polished guru” and “Rob as documented operator in the fight,” choose the documented operator.
1. Why this document exists
The Rob avatar is already implied across the strategy stack:
- BODI Reformation says Rob should sell himself, not Beachbody.
- Bridge Content says Hokage expresses Naruto / shonen framing plus Rocky underdog stakes.
- The chess and fitness world maps show the same structural lane: adult improver, public climb, community operator, not distant expert.
- The landing personas speak in level-talk: ELO bands, plateau language, tilt, stuckness, and concrete desired outcomes.
This file makes that implicit avatar explicit. It is the canonical archetype for Rob-facing content, product copy, community rituals, visual direction, and cross-domain messaging.
Scope boundaries:
- This doc defines the Rob avatar.
src/lib/landing-engine/personas.tsdefines audience personas.- Strategy v6 and the funnel docs define product tiers and conversion paths.
- The BODI Reformation Spec defines the fitness-side ownership pivot.
2. Core archetype
| Axis | Canon |
|---|---|
| Visual | Shonen training arc plus Rocky underdog grit. Red / white / black Hokage palette, manga-panel energy, sweat, clocks, rep counters, scoreboards, NYC chess-park texture, basement-gym honesty. |
| Voice | Direct, level-aware, profanity-OK when it compresses truth. Speaks from the trenches, not from the summit. Uses numbers, thresholds, and next drills instead of vague inspiration. |
| Story shape | Chess rating climb and fitness bulk arc as parallel hero journeys. Each arc has current level, training block, boss battle, setback, adjustment, and next quest. |
| Social role | Community-builder, coach, dual-disciplinarian, near-peer field journalist. |
| Offer posture | “Climb with me” before “buy from me.” Community and accountability are the product’s emotional core. |
| Authority claim | Earned map of the territory he has crossed, visible work on the territory he has not crossed yet. |
The avatar’s power is not expertise theater. It is legible effort.
3. What Rob is
Community-builder
Rob’s moat is the village. The audience should feel that their loss, plateau, comeback, bulk phase, missed lift, or 1200-to-1400 grind has a place to go.
Community language should point toward visible participation:
- post the game
- post the ugly set
- bring the failed tactic
- log the week
- show the number
- get corrected, then repeat
Coach
Rob coaches from mapped territory. He can teach the positions, habits, and mindset problems he has personally worked through, especially for people below or near his current level.
The coach posture is:
- “I have seen this mistake because I made it.”
- “Here is the drill that fixed it for me.”
- “Here is what I still do not know yet.”
- “Here is how we test whether it worked.”
Dual-disciplinarian
Chess and fitness are not two unrelated hobbies in this canon. They are two surfaces for the same operating principle:
train the body, train the board, track the number, survive the plateau, repeat.
The chess rating climb and the bulk arc should echo each other. A week of tactics and a week of squats are both discipline blocks. A stronger opponent and a heavier set are both boss battles. Tilt recovery and training recovery are both parts of the climb.
Near-peer field journalist
Rob is not the titled master handing down a solved curriculum. He is the climber taking notes while climbing. The field journal is part of the product.
Good Rob content shows:
- what happened
- what number changed
- what mistake appeared
- what adjustment comes next
- what the audience can do with it today
Avatar
Rob is the product-facing body of the system. Platforms, programs, tools, and products are support structures. They should never become the hero.
4. What Rob is not
| Not this | Guardrail |
|---|---|
| Nutritionist | Rob can document what he eats and what worked for him. He should not prescribe medical nutrition, disease treatment, supplement protocols, or clinical claims. |
| Scientist | Rob can cite credible sources and test habits in public. He should not present himself as a researcher, lab authority, or evidence priest. |
| MLM evangelist | BODI can be context, lineage, or a tool he used. It is not the avatar. The CTA should not make Rob feel like a distributor for a corporate machine. |
| Generic motivational poster | No empty “believe harder” slogans. Motivation must attach to a concrete level, drill, rep, game, or behavior. |
| Hyper-polished influencer | No glossy perfection fantasy. The texture is sweat, missed shots, blunders, bad days, correction, and return. |
| Distant grandmaster | Rob does not pretend to be a GM. The advantage is near-peer authority and documented climb. |
| Supplement salesman | Products can support the journey, but the journey cannot become a supplement checkout. |
| Lifestyle guru | The brand is discipline through chess, fitness, and community. It is not a generalized life-advice persona. |
The shortest rule: Rob is the avatar, not the intermediary.
5. Visual canon
Shonen / Naruto-adjacent cues
Use the language of ranks, arcs, exams, techniques, rivals, and the village:
- Genin, Chunin, Jonin, Hokage as progression language
- Jutsu as named technique
- Boss Battle as stronger-opponent episode
- training arc as content season
- village as community container
- manga-panel framing, impact cuts, motion lines, red stamps, handwritten annotations
Keep the allusion directional, not derivative. Do not copy specific Naruto character designs, symbols, costumes, marks, or scenes. The brand should read as shonen-inspired chess and training culture, not unofficial Naruto merchandise.
Rocky underdog cues
Use working-class climb energy:
- early mornings
- grey sweats, tape, chalk, simple gear
- concrete, park tables, old gyms, unglamorous rooms
- stairs, clocks, breath, sweat
- the notebook after the loss
- the walk back after getting hit
The point is not “champion already crowned.” The point is “the guy is still climbing and you can see the cost.”
Dual-discipline cues
Whenever possible, pair the two numbers:
- ELO / bodyweight
- puzzle streak / training streak
- clock time / rest time
- game review / workout log
- boss rating / target lift
- tilt recovery / recovery day
The visual system should make the same operator visible across chess and fitness without collapsing the domains into one blob.
6. Voice canon
Rob’s voice is direct, practical, and level-aware. It should sound like someone who knows the emotional temperature of being stuck at a number.
Voice rules
- Name the level first.
- Name the actual obstacle.
- Give the next drill or behavior.
- Tell the truth cleanly.
- Use profanity only when it sharpens the sentence.
- Never replace specifics with vibes.
Level-talk
Level-talk is mandatory. Use numbers and ranks as emotional anchors:
- “1000-1400 ELO”
- “1350 trying to reach 1500”
- “post-beginner, not master”
- “Genin to Chunin”
- “week 4 of the bulk”
- “three losses deep”
- “five pounds up, sleep down, lifts flat”
- “10 rapid games, 20 tactics, one reviewed loss”
The audience should know where they are on the map.
Profanity
Profanity is allowed, not required. It should function as pressure release or truth compression, never as brand cosplay.
Good use:
- “Stop pretending tilt is a personality trait. It is a trainable skill.”
- “This is where hope chess gets you killed.”
- “The bulk is not vibes. It is meals, reps, sleep, and not lying to yourself on Monday.”
Bad use:
- profanity as filler
- rage as performance
- shock language that does not teach anything
Example voice
Chess:
“At 1300, you do not need a 40-move opening file. You need to stop hanging the same bishop on move 12 and review the game before you queue again.”
Fitness:
“If the bulk is working, the log should show it. Bodyweight, lifts, sleep, meals. If the numbers are blank, you are not in a training arc. You are guessing.”
Community:
“Post the loss. Post the ugly set. We fix what we can see.”
7. Story shape
Every major Rob story should be a parallel hero journey:
| Beat | Chess expression | Fitness expression |
|---|---|---|
| Current level | “I am 1350, trying to break 1500.” | “I am in this bulk phase, trying to add size and strength without drifting.” |
| Training block | Tactics, endgames, repertoire, time control, tilt resistance. | Program block, lifts, food consistency, sleep, recovery. |
| Boss battle | Stronger opponent, titled coach, park player, old rival, past self. | Heavy set, stalled lift, missed meal week, fatigue, mirror check, past self. |
| Setback | Blunder, tilt spiral, flagging, opening collapse. | Missed sessions, weak recovery, scale noise, low-energy day. |
| Adjustment | Review, drill, repertoire change, clock rule. | Program tweak, food prep, rest, form correction. |
| Next quest | Rating milestone, cohort challenge, Jutsu drill. | Next block, next PR target, adherence streak. |
Use Ki-Sho-Ten-Ketsu shape where useful:
- Ki: establish the current level and stakes.
- Sho: show the work.
- Ten: reveal the twist, mistake, boss, or plateau.
- Ketsu: resolve into a lesson and next quest.
Do not make the story a fake transformation reveal. Make it serial. The audience returns because the climb is unfinished.
8. Operating guardrails
Rob owns the center
Any content that makes BODI, Chess.com, a supplement, a course platform, an app, or a tool feel more central than Rob’s lived system is drifting.
Correct hierarchy:
- Rob’s documented climb
- The community climbing with him
- The training method
- The supporting tool or product
Claims stay inside earned authority
Allowed:
- “This helped me.”
- “This is how I coach this level.”
- “Here is the drill.”
- “Here is the result I saw.”
- “Here is what I still need to test.”
Avoid:
- medical claims
- nutrition prescription
- scientific certainty without evidence
- guaranteed body transformation
- guaranteed rating increase without a defined program and constraints
The mess is evidence
Losses, missed lifts, bad thumbnails, failed hooks, bad games, plateaus, and awkward iterations are not brand damage. They are proof that the story is live.
Do not airbrush the climb until the only thing left is a generic influencer.
9. Anti-archetypes
| Anti-archetype | Symptoms | Replacement |
|---|---|---|
| Generic motivational poster | “No excuses,” “grind harder,” sunrise quote cards, no level, no drill. | Name the level, name the failure, assign the next rep. |
| BODI-corp shill | Product-first CTA, corporate language, supplement as hero, Rob as distributor. | Rob-first story, owned coaching / community / journey as hero. |
| Hyper-polished influencer | Perfect lighting, perfect meals, perfect games, no visible correction. | Training log, reviewed loss, real gym texture, current number. |
| Fake scientist | Overconfident claims, study-name dropping, lab-coat certainty. | Plain test-and-log language with source humility. |
| Titled-expert cosplay | Pretending to teach from GM altitude. | Near-peer authority: “I crossed this part; I am still climbing that part.” |
| Anime costume act | Surface cosplay with no training structure. | Shonen mechanics: ranks, arcs, techniques, rivals, exams, village. |
If a piece of content could be posted by any fitness coach, any chess instructor, or any motivational account, it is not specific enough.
10. Surface applications
YouTube
- Open with the current number, opponent, position, or mistake.
- Keep Road-to episodes discoverable as standalone stories.
- Use Jutsu and Boss Battle as recurring format language.
- Let losses teach. Do not hide them behind irony.
- CTA toward the free plan, Discord, or cohort climb. Do not scatter CTAs.
Instagram / fitness
- Make Rob’s own training arc visible before any product.
- Pair the clip with a level-specific observation.
- Show logs, sets, adherence, misses, recovery, and adjustment.
- Keep BODI as context or tool, not the identity.
Discord / community
- Ritualize visible participation: reviewed loss, puzzle streak, weekly training log, boss battle recap.
- Reward posted evidence over polished outcomes.
- Keep rank language useful, not decorative.
Landing pages / product copy
- Speak to the stuck band by name: 1000-1400, 1400-1800, returning adult improver.
- Position Rob as beside the audience, not above them.
- Use exact outcomes and next actions.
- Make the village visible as the conversion promise.
11. Canon tests
Before shipping Rob-facing content, run these checks:
- Can the viewer tell the current level?
- Is Rob the avatar, not a distributor or platform mouthpiece?
- Is there a concrete training act, drill, review, rep, or next behavior?
- Does the piece feel shonen / Rocky without copying protected IP?
- Does it avoid nutritionist, scientist, MLM, and guru claims?
- Is the community invited into the climb?
- Is the mess visible enough to prove the work is live?
- Could this be posted by a generic creator? If yes, rewrite it.

13. Reception
This doc is doing its job when:
- Future Hokage and Rob-fitness content can cite one avatar source instead of reconstructing the persona from scattered docs.
- Visual direction consistently reads as shonen training arc plus Rocky underdog grit.
- Voice consistently uses direct level-talk instead of generic motivation.
- Rob remains the product-facing avatar across chess, fitness, and community.
- Anti-archetype drift is caught before shipping.
